What is happening physically? 

The menstrual phase begins on Day 1 of bleeding. Bleeding can last from 1 to 7 days. If the egg is not fertilized during ovulation, it will break apart. Then, hormone levels drop, and the thickened lining of the uterus is shed, in the form of menstrual blood.
